Jute: An Eco-Friendly Fiber

The principal material that makes up most of our bags comes from a plant fiber called jute. Always curious, we here at Rice Love decided to do a little research into what jute really is, where it comes from, and what the benefits of using it are. Here’s what we learned:

Jute is a long, soft natural plant fiber that can be spun into strong, coarse threads and is used in a variety of ways. The fibers come from the plants Corchorus olitorius and Corchorus capsularis.

India is the world’s largest producer of jute. Jute flourishes in areas with warm weather, high humidity, and tropical rainfall.

In terms of global usage, jute comes in second only to cotton. Due to its versatile nature, there are many uses of jute. Some of the most common uses include to make twine, sacks, bags, cloth, rugs, and mats. Jute can even be used to make furniture, and is also used in culinary preparation in some parts of the world.

One of the greatest advantages of jute is that it is 100% biodegradable, thus it is more environmentally safe compared to synthetic fibers. Jute also has a very low carbon footprint due to the fact that as it grows, it assimilates 3 times more Carbon Dioxide than the average tree, and converts it into Oxygen.

We don’t know about you, but we’re definitely looking at our Rice Love bags a little differently now! We <3 jute!
